Our story

Our Story

Ikara Orphanage Charity Trust (IKOCT) is a charitable, non-governmental organisation established in 2008 in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, North-western Nigeria, with the primary aim of providing care, protection, education and health support to its registered orphans. The organisation was founded by a group of concerned individuals who were motivated by the increasing number of children who had lost their parents and were experiencing difficulties in accessing basic necessities of life. This organisation is a corporate entity registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (RC: 65707). It is a well-structured organisation with Dr. Abdurrahman Sambo mni currently serving as the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), after he succeeded Prof. S.U. Abdullahi, mni, who served as the pioneer BOT chairman; and now the life patron. Other members of the BOT include Mal. Abdulhamid Dahiru (Secretary), Alh. Ibrahim Sambo, Alh. Shehu Muhammad Shitu, Dr. Kabiru Salisu, and Mal. Aliyu Labaran. The major activities of our organisation include provision of educational support, healthcare services, feeding programmes, skills acquisition and vocational training, psychosocial counselling, child protection, and provision of clothing and other essential materials. The organisation works with government agencies, community leaders, individuals, philanthropists and other development partners to improve the welfare of vulnerable children (orphans). The Trust started with only five (5) orphans in the first year of its establishment, and this number has increased to up to one thousand four hundred and eight (1408) as at 2026. Particular attention is given to ensuring that every child under its care has access to quality education and develops the skills necessary to become a responsible and self-reliant member of society. Since its establishment, the Foundation has recorded several achievements. These include: successful enrollement of almost 1000 orphaned children in basic and post basic schools, continuous provision of feeding, clothings and healthcare support, assisted many orphans to acquire vocational skills, and provision of educational scholarships to over thirty (30) orphans who have successfully graduated from different universities and some other institutions of higher learning, established collaboration with sister organizations, partial development of its permanent site through construction of offices and a library. Through its commitment to orphans’ welfare and community development, Ikara Orphanage Charity Trust continues to work towards creating a better future for these vulnerable children by providing them with the care, opportunities and support they need to live productive and dignified lives.
